I think that anybody who is so supremely commanded by their religious beliefs that they WILINGLY overlook the health and welfare of their own children is, on some level, brainwashed. The commenters on that post are right - faith is not faith without works, acts of faith, leaps of faith, etc.
I think a fraction of this issue is what really heats up debates about vaccinations, which is another really hotly contested topic. It's heavy stuff.
